The goal of the cat genome project has been to facilitate the development of the cat model for human disease etiology through building feline genomic resources for the cat, constructing a full genome map, annotating the cat’s genome sequence, and applying these genomic resources to identify genetic factors associated with phenotypic variation in the cat which have application to improve human health. The last several years have seen many goals of the cat genome realized. An overview of the genome project as well as its application to the molecular genetic characterization of two feline models of hereditary disease, spinal muscular atrophy and retinitis pigmentosa will be presented. An additional focus of our research has been to identify aspects of feline morphology that have the potential to offer unique insights compared to other mammalian systems, e.g. rodents or domestic dogs. Our linkage and segregation studies have identified two loci, Tabby and Ticked, that control the existence and appearance of regular stripes and spots, and provide an opportunity to address a longstanding mystery in biology first addressed by Alan Turing in development of the reaction-diffusion theory of pattern formation. The results of recent research will be presented on the genetic basis underlying pattern formation in the cat, identifying a mutation in an extracellular protease that is unique to vertebrate genomes and which therefore has the potential to go beyond what has been previously learned from studying pattern formation in invertebrate systems.
