2012学年秋季学期系列学术讲座之十
题目:Sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide is a functional receptor for human hepatitis B and D virus
报告人:Wenhui Li(李文辉)
北京生命科学研究所研究员
时间:2012年11月23日(周五),13:00-14:30 PM

Research Description:
Dr. Li`s lab tries to understand the entry mechanisms of enveloped viruses - a process that is critical to viral replication. Regardless of the type of enveloped virus, the initial step of viral entry always involves the interactions between the viral fusion protein and specific viral receptor(s) on host cells. The questions that they are mostly interested in are: what is the specific cellular receptor for a virus? How does the receptor contribute to membrane fusion and viral entry? How do other additional host cellular factors contribute to viral entry? How does the viral entry protein evade the host immune response? How does the virus alter their entry proteins to infect new species, and how can viral replication be inhibited by entry inhibitor or host immunity. They seek to identify the receptors and elucidate the entry processes of viral pathogens important to human health, such as novel coronaviruses, Hantavirus, Japanese Encephalitis Virus, and Hepatitis B virus. Their work will mainly involve in protein characterization with biochemical approaches, which in most cases do not require special biosafety protocols or facilities. Knowledge of viral entry mechanisms will deepen their understanding of basic biology of viruses and their host cells, and offer new opportunities to develop more efficient entry inhibitors and new generation of viral vaccines.
